Will it be their last World Cup?

Sachin Tendulkar (India)
Cricket fans who seemingly would like to see Sachin Tendulkar bat till he is 80 may still be convinced that he will be around for the 2015 World Cup when he turns 42. It is also being mentioned that if India does not win the World Cup this time that will be an incentive for Tendulkar to stay on and try and achieve the one qualification missing from his CV - a World Cup winner's medal.

And much as he has surprised us all by his recent performances in both Tests and ODIs despite getting on in years and completing 21 years in international cricket and showing that like good wine he gets better with age, it is difficult to believe that Tendulkar will be still around in four year's time whether India wins the title this time or not.
He will be playing in his sixth World Cup equaling Javed Miandad's record (he figured in the first six events from 1975 to 1996 and has a winner's medal to show for his efforts) and like in Tests and ODIs his World Cup figures will be hard to duplicate - he holds the record for most runs (1796), most hundreds (four) along with three others, most runs in a tournament (673), the third wicket partnership record with Rahul Dravid (237 against Kenya in 1999) and with 36 appearances he could be running Ponting with a record 39 matches close when World Cup 2011 ends.

His team members have said that they will do their best so that Tendulkar could retire with that winner's medal hanging in his home in Mumbai. We shall know over the next few weeks.

Will it be their last World Cup?

Shivnarine Chanderpaul (West Indies)
His batting - based on a crabby technique and intense concentration - would appear tailor made for Test cricket and not for the limited overs game but Chanderpaul has surprised one and all by figuring in the top 15 run-getters in ODIs.

Adjusting himself to the needs of the side and the slam bang variety of batting associated with limited overs cricket, the pugnacious left-hander has scored 8648 runs at an average of almost 42 at a decent strike rate of 71 - with 11 hundreds and 59 fifties and a highest score of 150.
But somehow he has not done justice to his reputation and experience in the World Cup. Despite playing in four such competitions, his aggregate is well below the 900-run mark, with just one hundred against Ireland in 2007.

One can somehow see Chanderpaul set the record right this time around, but at 36 this should be his last chance to do so. One just cannot see him around till the 2015 World Cup when he will be in his 41st year.

Will it be their last World Cup?

Shoaib Akhtar (Pakistan)
He has rarely been out of the headlines - both for his performances on the field and the controversies off it. All the same there has been little doubt that Shoaib Akhtar has been one of the most colourful cricketing personalities for about 12 years.

For him bowling fast has been a passion and in fact he made it clear that to bowl at 100 miles an hour was an obsession. He achieved that objective during the 2003 World Cup sending down a delivery to Nick Knight timed at 100.2 mph. His long career has seen the kinds of ups and downs that few cricketers have been through but at his best Akhtar has been a sight for the cricketing gods.
Unfortunately, he has squandered many opportunities to add substantially to his impressive tally of wickets in all formats of the game and in the final analysis it must be said that Akhtar will remain a supreme talent who allowed himself to go astray.

It is to be hoped that in the World Cup he will make one last effort to summon up the Akhtar of old for he will be in his 40th year when the next such event rolls around and it is a fair bet that he will not be around.

Will it be their last World Cup?

Scott Styris (New Zealand)

He has been an integral part of the New Zealand side for about a dozen years now and while he has performed creditably in Test matches, there is little doubt that Scott Styris's game is tailor made for limited overs cricket.

A utility player par excellence when it comes to ODIs and Twenty20, the burly Kiwi has proved time and again that when the chips are down he can be relied upon to play the rescue act to perfection, either with his big hitting (he has a strike rate of nearly 80 in ODIs and almost 120 in Twenty20) or his brisk medium pacers - qualities that have brought him over 4000 runs and more than 100 wickets in ODIs.
Three years ago Styris retired from Tests so that he could prolong his limited overs career - a decision vindicated by improved performances. New Zealand's opponents are aware that no match is won till they have seen the back of Styris who has the ability to swing matches either with a timely burst of hitting or with a couple of quick wickets.

Styris had an outstanding World Cup in 2007 scoring 499 runs at an average of 83 and playing the stellar role in New Zealand making the semifinals. He is still a dangerous player but four years on he will be in his 40th year at the time of World Cup 2015, and for all his manifold skills it is unlikely that he will be around.

Will it be their last World Cup?

Paul Collingwood (England)
The late developer has packed a good deal of eventful cricket in his career in all three formats of the game, but in all likelihood, he is not going to be around for the 2015 World Cup.

As a reliable middle-order batsman in Tests and a notable partnership-breaker with his gentle medium pacers, as an excellent utility man in limited overs cricket and as the successful captain of the Twenty20 squad, Paul Collingwood has rendered yeoman service to English cricket.

The crowning glory must be leading England to a notable triumph in the Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean last year, but close behind would be his gutsy batting in Tests and his superb all-round show in ODIs where he is one of the few players to achieve the double of 5000 runs and 100 wickets.

Collingwood, who was a member of the England team in the 2003 and 2007 World Cup competitions, announced his retirement from Test cricket at the end of the recent Ashes series.

He will be 35 a couple of months after the end of the World Cup, and it is a safe bet to assume that he will not be around four years from now.

Will it be their last World Cup?

Jacques Kallis (South Africa)
It might be dangerous to predict that the World Cup would be Kallis' last such event. Like Tendulkar, he too seems to be getting better with age and his broad shoulders, burly frame and manifold skills have seen him run up an all round record the likes of which one day cricket has never seen and probably never will see - over 11,000 runs and 259 wickets.
This is in addition to scoring almost 12,000 runs and taking 270 wickets in Tests and figuring with some distinction in the Twenty20 squad as well. The great all rounder has been an important member of the South African team for the last four World Cup competitions but somehow his record in the tournament is not in keeping with his lofty reputation.

He has still to cross 1000 runs in the World Cup and has notched up only one hundred against Holland in 2007. One expects him to fire on all cylinders in the sub continent but despite having an excellent fitness record, one just cannot see him part of the South African team for the 2015 World Cup when he will be in his 40th year.

Will it be their last World Cup?

Ricky Ponting (Australia)

He has led Australia to victory in the two previous World Cup competitions; has a 100 percent success record as captain; has been a stalwart in the two tournaments prior to 2003 and 2007, and has established himself as one of the greatest of all batsmen in both Tests and ODIs.

But at 36, it is reasonable to assume that this will be the last World Cup that Ricky Ponting will be seen in. Already there are indications that there is a palpable fall in his high batting standards - he is not playing with the majesty of old and the fall in the averages is alarming.

Besides, his deputy Michael Clarke, one or two others have been mentioned as players who could take over the captaincy not only in ODIs but also in Tests and while he may weather the storm and continue to play for a couple of years more in both formats of the game, there is no way one can see him still around when the competition rolls around again in 2015.

In his farewell World Cup let us treasure the batting of Ponting whose tally of 1537 runs is second only to Sachin Tendulkar.

He holds the record of four centuries (along with three others) and most appearances (39 matches along with Glenn McGrath).

Besides, Ponting and McGrath are the only members of three victorious World Cup squads. A little known fact is that he holds the record of most catches (25) in the World Cup.

UP: teen stabbed for spurning man, one held

Unnao, Uttar Pradesh: A minor girl was stabbed in the jaw and throat for spurning the advances of a man in an Uttar Pradesh village, police said on Wednesday, just three days after another 17-year-old girl was brutally disfigured in Fatehpur district for resisting gangrape.
The latest incident took place late on Monday in Kansapurwa village near Unnao, about 35 km from Lucknow. Ram Sewak, aged around 28 years, was arrested for attacking the girl, also 17 years old.
"Ram Sewak had been absconding since the attack. Acting on the complaint of the victim's father, we constituted a team and managed to arrest Ram Sewak on Wednesday," police inspector Shagir Ahmad said.
"Ram Sewak has been booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 307 (attempt to murder) and 345 (wrongful confinement of person)," he added.
According to police, the victim is being treated at a Kanpur hospital and her condition is stated to be out of danger.
"We shifted her from a hospital here to Lala Rai Hospital in Kanpur for better treatment," said Ahmad.
Last week's victim of a similar instance of sexual assault is also in a Kanpur hospital. She had been maimed by three youths in Fatehpur district late Saturday for resisting rape. Of the three accused involved in the brutal attack, two have been arrested.

Obama- U.S. Can't force out Mubarak

The United States can't force out Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, but the Egyptian people will no longer allow unresponsive government without representation or free and fair elections, President Obama said in an interview Sunday with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly.
With that in mind, an orderly but meaningful transition to a new government will reduce the possibility of a radical, anti-American government, the president argued in a pre-Super Bowl XLV interview.
"What I want is a representative government in Egypt and I have confidence that if Egypt moves in an orderly transition process, they will have a government in Egypt that will work together with us" as partners, Obama said from the White House, where he was preparing to entertain about 100 guests for the Super Bowl game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers.
Click here to watch Bill O'Reilly's interview with President Obama.
Mubarak has ruled Egypt with an autocratic fist for decades even as the country has been an ally to the United States. While the embattled Egyptian president has been a reliable partner in upholding the peace accords with Israel and in counterterror efforts, in the past two weeks hundreds of thousands have stormed a central square in Egypt's capital Cairo to protest Mubarak's oppressive rule.

Though the strength and breadth of the demonstrations were unexpected, the United States has quickly moved to convincing Mubarak that it's time for him to step down after the presidential elections scheduled for September, if not sooner.
But any sudden toppling of the Mubarak regime could create major headaches for the United States, particularly if the void permits a group like the radical Muslim Brotherhood, which is negotiating with the current government about leadership changes, to emerge victorious.
Obama suggested he's less concerned about that.
"The Muslim Brotherhood is one faction in Egypt. They don't have majority support in Egypt, but they are well organized and there are strains of their ideology that are against the U.S., there's no doubt about it," Obama said. "But here's the thing that we have to understand, there are a whole bunch of secular folks in Egypt, there are a whole bunch of educators and civil society in Egypt that wants to come to the fore as well. So it's important for us not to say that our own only two options are either the Muslim Brotherhood or a suppressed people."
To avoid such scenarios, Obama said that the U.S. must make sure "that we get all the groups together in Egypt for an orderly transition and the one that is a meaningful transition."
Foreign relations aren't the only matters on the president's mind. In his wide-ranging interview, the president appeared nonplussed about the possibility that the Supreme Court would rule his new health care law unconstitutional.
Repeating remarks he made in his State of the Union address last month -- that he doesn't want to re-fight the battles of the past two years -- Obama nonetheless said he thinks a Florida district judge was wrong to rule against his signature domestic achievement.
"Keep in mind, we've had 12 judges that just threw this case out, this notion that the health care law was unconstitutional," Obama said.
Obama would not speculate on what would happen to the program if the Supreme Court throws out the case, but said he is not prepared to go back to the days when Americans with preconditions couldn't get coverage.
Adding that people want cost controls and security in health care, the president also took issue with suggestions that he has moved to the center after the drubbing Democrats took in the November midterm election. And he rejected claims that the health care law is a far-reach to the wishes of the political left.
Arguing that he hears people who say that they don't want to pay for other people's health care -- which many uninsured don't get until they are in the emergency room -- Obama said, "If you get sick you have a responsibility to make sure you get coverage. There's nothing socialist about that. That's saying to Americans we're going to, each of us, be responsible for our own health care," Obama said.
"In this country there is no reason why when you get sick you should go bankrupt," he added. "The notion that that's a radical principle, I don't think the majority of people would agree with me on."
Answering an unexpected question about what he thinks Fox News could do better, the president said, "The most important thing that the news (can do), whether it's Fox News or MSNBC or whoever, is give people the facts."
"I would say that the news guys try to do a good job, though look let's face it, Fox News has a point of view. There's nothing wrong with that," the president said, arguing that America has "a strong history" of opinion journalism.
In a series of short response questions and answers, the president joked that the worst part of the job is that he has to wear a jacket on Super Bowl Sunday. In reality, however, "the biggest problem for me is being in the bubble, you can't go to the corner, everyone watching every move you make and over time you feel like you're not able to have a spontaneous conversation with folks and that's a big loss."
He added that the biggest challenge he learned being president is that it's tougher than anyone can intellectually grasp.
"You don't understand in your gut until you're in the job ... that everything that gets sent to my desk is what nobody else was able to solve," he said, adding that by the time a problem reaches him, the solution comes really from using his best judgment.
Obama said he doesn't worry whether people hate him because he learned to get a tough skin long before he got to the job.
"The folks who hate you don't know you. What they hate is whatever funhouse mirror image of you is out there," he said.
Asked if he's changed, Obama said he thinks he's the same guy as when he came in, but he didn't argue with assertions from friends and confidants that he's not as light or spontaneous as he was.
"There's no doubt that the weight of the office has an impact, but I will tell you that the longer I'm in this job the more I enjoy it, the more optimistic I am about the American people, the more optimistic I am about the country. There's something about this position that gives you a pretty good vantage point about the country as a whole, and for all the arguing we get into and all the debates between Democrats and Republicans, there's just a sense, a common sense and a decency to the American people that makes me optimistic even on the worst of days."
The president said he was also optimistic for a good Super Bowl.
"Once my (Chicago) Bears lost, I don't pick sides," he said. "I want a great game. These are two pretty evenly matched teams. I think Green Bay is probably a little faster, Steelers got a little more experience. I think the Steelers not having their starting center is something they gotta be a little worried about

Obama raises pressure on Mubarak

Jeremy Bowen reports from Cairo where the army formed a protective barrier around protesters
Barack Obama has urged Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak "to make the right decision" to end weeks of unrest, and reiterated a call for an orderly transition of power "that begins now".

However the US president stopped short of telling Mr Mubarak to step down immediately.

He spoke as huge crowds demonstrated across Egypt for an 11th day, demanding that Mr Mubarak resign.

But PM Ahmed Shafiq said it would not be practical for the president to go.

He told the BBC Mr Mubarak's declaration on Tuesday that he would not seek re-election in September was tantamount to him standing down.

"In effect, the president has stepped down already," Mr Shafiq said. "We need him during these nine months."

He separately told al-Arabiya TV that it was unlikely Mr Mubarak would hand over power to his new Vice-President, Omar Suleiman, because the president was needed "for legislative reasons".

Barack Obama: "We want to see this moment of turmoil turn into a moment of opportunity"

Meanwhile, there were suggestions that the protesters would reduce their presence in central Cairo, holding big demonstrations only on Fridays, with smaller numbers there at other times.
'World is watching'

More than 100,000 people - including large numbers of women and children - gathered in Tahrir Square in the centre of Cairo on Friday for what was being called the "day of departure".

At noon, thousands paused for Friday prayers with one cleric declaring: "We want the head of the regime removed."

As the prayers finished, demonstrators renewed their chants of "Leave! Leave! Leave!", singing patriotic songs and waving flags.

Some people left as darkness fell, but thousands remained the square.
There were also demonstrations in Egypt's second city, Alexandria, and in the towns of Suez, Port Said, Rafah, Ismailiya, Zagazig, al-Mahalla al-Kubra, Aswan and Asyut.

In Washington Mr Obama told reporters: "The whole world is watching."

He said he had been encouraged by the restraint shown by both the authorities and the protesters after two days of clashes which have left eight people dead and more than 800 injured.

The UN believes more than 300 have died across Egypt since the protests began on 25 January, with about 4,000 hurt.

Mr Obama did not insist that Mr Mubarak step down immediately, but repeated his call for a "transition period that begins now".

"He needs to listen to what is voiced by the people and make a judgment about a pathway forward that is orderly, that is meaningful and serious," he said.

"The key question he should be asking himself is: how do I leave a legacy behind in which Egypt is able to get through this transformative period? My hope is he will end up making the right decision."

BBC North America editor Mark Mardell says Mr Obama went further than before in suggesting that the Egyptian president should go, but could not quite bring himself - no doubt for very good diplomatic reasons - to say the words.

The Obama administration is relieved that Friday's huge protests did not turn nasty, because violence is the biggest threat to the change it wants, our correspondent says.

There were real nerves in Washington that the army would be forced to choose between their commander-in-chief and the people, he adds. Instead they remained neutral, keeping the rival groups of demonstrators apart.
Opposition talks

The opposition has so far refused to attend any talks on a future government unless President Mubarak steps down, while the government says protesters must go home for talks to be held.

A US official told the BBC a meeting could be held in the coming days, and that the US was urging the government to move ahead with the dialogue.

Ranbir Kapoor voted as the Sexiest Asian Man

The Rockstar of Bollywood, Ranbir Kapoor has finally clinched the Sexiest Asian Man title, beating some strong competitors like John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan.

This Kapoor scion, who is famous for his high profile romances, topped the survey, which was conducted by the London Weekly, Eastern Eye.

The 28-year-old heartthrob of the nation says, “If the women did not like me I would feel that something is wrong, but it does feel good. I do understand that the fans I have comprise mainly of women, it feels good to be wanted by so many women.”

Meanwhile the editor of Eastern Eye said that the actor had claimed for this title with an overwhelming margin. The editor said, “Usually it is a closely fought contest, where as this year there was only one clear winner. Winning by large margin is remarkable when you take into consideration the very high profile men who were in the list.”

Ranbir made his acting debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. He has been going strong post his launch and has tasted every bit of the commercial success with hits like Rajneeti, Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani.

The Bollywood hunk John Abraham missed this spot and landed second on this. Hrithik Roshan got the third spot while R&B star Jay Sean got the fourth spot.

Surprisingly, the ladylove of Ranbir’s life also topped the list of the hottest women in the world.

SRK: ‘If Salman is upset with me, then it is my fault’

Karan Johar completely broke down when SRK started speaking about his former friends Farah Khan and Salman Khan. The episode of Koffee with Karan will air on January 2.

A source on the sets says, “SRK’s episode with KJo is emotional where Shahrukh Khan has been caught in a mellow, introspective mood. He is emotionally vulnerable, revelaing things that have hurt him in the last year.”

The source continued to add, “When Karan pointed out people feel that old friends Farah Khan and Salman have problems with Shahrukh Khan, SRK said, ‘I don’t know how to make friends and if I did and I have no clue how to keep them. If Salman and Farah are upset with me then it is 100 percent my fault, but I can’t pick up the phone and say sorry. I cannot apologize because I have ego issues, but because I cannot say get myself to ask people to come back to me. Once I did ask my parents to come back to me and they did not.”

He also admitted that one of his biggest enemies is his cell phone as many of his friends have complained that he does not take their calls and ignores them. At one point Karan had tears in his eyes when SRK said, “I feel it is understood that I love them if I have said it once, I cannot keep repeating it. I have some problem in saying ‘I Love You’ twice and thrice and keep repeating those words. Even in my movies I can never keep saying ‘I Love You!’”

KJo said, “It was totally a different cup of coffee this time. it is really awkward to discuss and recreate all those intimate scenes normally again. Till date I have never become emotional on the sets of Koffee with Karan, because that has never been the tone of the show. It is usually controversial and spicy.”

When asked about SRK on the couch he says, “SRK is one of the warmest human beings I have seen in this industry, he has spoken openly about his family, friends and relationships. There is some strength in what he said. He is beyond any kind of issues. You can feel that he has risen above every situation and this comes beautifully through this show. This coffee on the couch episode with SRK was emotionally unplugged and more than humor unplugged. It has a new impact!”

Sanjay Dutt Refused To Work With Sexy Bollywood Actress Mallika Sherawat.

Sanjay Dutt was offered a film opposite Mallika Sherawat which is a remake of his father Sunil Dutt’s film ‘Amrapali’. Mallika was approached to play the role of Vyjayanthimala but Sanju Baba refused to act with the sexy lady.

It is not clear whether he was opposed to the actress on a personal level or if he had doubts about her ability to pull off the role, but he made it amply clear that he didn’t want to work with the bold actress.

At first, Sanjay Dutt showed interest in the film but later he opposed citing dates problem. A source reveals, When the makers first went to him, they hadn’t zeroed in on the actress. At the time, Sanju was open to discussing the possibility of being a part of the film.

When they returned to him a few weeks later, and suggested casting the Hissss actress in the film, he decided to back out. He said he had date problems and excused himself from the project.

They are working in ‘Dhamaal 2’ together but not paired opposite each other. On the set, Sanjay was more close to the other actress Kangana Ranaut but he did not comfort with Mallika.

In fact, he had named her a badly dressed celebrity on Koffee with Karan a few seasons back. Now that Dutt has turned out the project, the producers are figuring out who to cast in place of him, opposite the Sexy Sherawat.

IPL GC to take decision on Sourav Ganguly

Mumbai: The IPL Governing Council will take a decision on the three unsold Indian players, including former captain Sourav Ganguly, at its meeting here on Friday.

No franchise showed interest in buying Ganguly at his base price of USD 400,000 during the auction on January 8 and 9. Wasim Jaffer and V R V Singh also went unsold.

The IPL, in a letter to all the teams, had said a request has been received from franchises that subject to them having sufficient balance on the salary cap to pay at least the reserve price of the relevant player, they should have the opportunity to sign unsold Indian players from the auction.
IPL`s Chief Operating Officer Sundar Raman further said "the auction regulations were clear that players not taken in the auction could only play in IPL 2011 as replacement players."

"Before the Governing Council deliberates on this issue, I wanted to get your view on this issue and if your franchise is agreeable to : permit franchise to buy any unsold Indian players from the auction; The player can be bought only at his reserve price".

Raman has said franchisees should send their views by today failing which it would be considered that they were not opposed to the request.

It is not known whether the letter from Mumbai Indians that criticised the way the IPL Players` Auction was held in the first week of last month would be taken up tomorrow.

In a letter written to the IPL, Indiawin Sports, which owns MI franchise, had alleged that players were auctioned through a pre-decided order of auction list, in contrast to the earlier plan that they would be arranged into sets and the order by which they would be put under the hammer would be drawn randomly.

MI`s letter also said that this change was intimated to the franchises just a day before the auction.

DMK to showcase Raja as a hero

Chennai: The 2G spectrum scam is all set to take the election campaign in Tamil Nadu to a new bandwidth. While the opposition is calling it unprecedented corruption, DMK chief Karunanidhi is all set to project Raja as a hero of the people.

The DMK chief is firmly backing his blue eyed boy, A Raja, who's now in CBI custody in connection with the 2G spectrum scam.

The DMK says Mr Raja, a massively popular Dalit leader, will remain Propaganda Secretary, a powerful position.

"The only wrong Raja committed was making mobile phones affordable to millions of poor people. Raja is in jail, I appreciate him on their behalf," DMK chief M Karunanidhi said.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report may have damned Raja but Karunanidhi's strategy is clear. He's going to showcase Raja as a hero in the upcoming election campaign.

DMK sources say the spectrum scam will dent the DMK's vote bank in cities and Karunanidhi's job is to keep his rural votes intact using Raja's mobile mantra.

After his arrest on Wednesday, party sources said that the corruption charges against Mr Raja were unlikely to matter much to rural voters, who are not interested in the 2G scam.

US Officials: US-Egypt discuss Mubarak quitting

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is in talks with top Egyptian officials about the possible immediate resignation of President Hosni Mubarak and the formation of an interim government that could prepare the country for free and fair elections later this year, U.S. officials said late Thursday.

Creation of a military-backed caretaker government in Egypt is one of several ideas being discussed as anti-Mubarak protests escalate in the streets of Cairo and other Egyptian cities, the officials said. Those protests are expected to grow in size and intensity on Friday and the administration fears they may erupt into more widespread violence unless the government takes tangible steps to address the protesters' main demand that Mubarak leave office.

The officials stressed the United States isn't seeking to impose a solution on Egypt but noted that the administration had made a judgment that Mubarak has to go soon if there is to be a peaceful resolution to the crisis. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic talks, which are continuing. The talks about Mubarak's immediate departure were first reported by The New York Times.

White House and State Department spokesmen would not discuss details of the discussions U.S. officials are having with the Egyptians. Vice President Joe Biden spoke with Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman on Thursday, a day after a similar conversation between Suleiman and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Officials said neither Biden nor Clinton made a specific call for Mubarak to resign immediately but pressed for measures that would ease tensions on the streets and set the stage for democratic elections.

"The president has said that now is the time to begin a peaceful, orderly and meaningful transition, with credible, inclusive negotiations," said White House national security spokesman Tommy Vietor on Thursday night. "We have discussed with the Egyptians a variety of different ways to move that process forward, but all of those decisions must be made by the Egyptian people."

An administration official said there is no single plan being discussed with the Egyptians.

Rather, the administration is pursuing different ideas with Egyptian figures on how to proceed quickly with a process that includes a broad range of voices and leads to free and fair elections — in essence, different ways to accomplish those goals.

Among those options is a proposal for Mubarak to resign immediately — which the embattled president has refused to do — and for Mubarak to cede power to a transitional government run by Suleiman.

But the official rejected the notion that the White House was trying to impose that idea and said it was not at all clear it would happen. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

The discussions come amid escalating violence between pro- and anti-Mubarak forces.

The United States on Thursday severely criticized what it called systematic attacks on journalists in Egypt and said they appeared to be an attempt to shut out reporting of even bigger anti-government demonstrations to come.

Clinton condemned "in the strongest terms" the pro-government mobs that beat, threatened and intimidated reporters in Cairo.

Attacks as well on peaceful demonstrators, human rights activists, foreigners and diplomats were "unacceptable under any circumstances," she said.

Clinton pointed the finger at Mubarak's government without explicitly blaming the 82-year-old president for the violence. She said, "It is especially in times of crisis that governments must demonstrate their adherence to these universal values,"

Egypt's government must hold accountable those responsible for the attacks and "must demonstrate its willingness to ensure journalists' ability to report on these events to the people of Egypt and to the world," she said.

Foreign photographers reported attacks by Mubarak supporters near Tahrir Square, the scene of vicious battles between Mubarak supporters and protesters demanding he step down after nearly 30 years in power.

The Egyptian government has accused media outlets of being sympathetic to protesters who want Mubarak to quit now rather than complete his term as he has pledged.

Among the many detained were correspondents for The New York Times, Washington Post and Al-Jazeera. Human rights groups said many activists also were taken away after a raid by the military police on a legal center in Cairo.

The Obama administration warned that the arrests and intimidation of reporters may be aimed at stopping the spread of the anti-government message ahead of a potentially critical protests Friday, when many Egyptians are expected to take to the streets after prayer services.

"It could well be that this is in anticipation of events tomorrow," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said. "We are bracing for a significant increase in the number of demonstrators on the streets and the real prospect of a confrontation."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs also offered a strong denunciation of reported "systematic targeting" of journalists. He said, "I think we need to be clear that the world is watching the actions that are taking place right now in Egypt."

On Capitol Hill, the Senate approved a non-binding resolution late Thursday urging Mubarak to hand over power to a caretaker government and begin a peaceful transition to a democratic society.

Amid heightened U.S. concern about rising violence in Egypt, President Barack Obama began his remarks at Thursday's National Prayer Breakfast with pointed hopes for better days ahead: "We pray that the violence in Egypt will end and the rights and aspirations of the Egyptian people will be realized."

And the administration complained Mubarak's government was failing to immediately start a process toward real democracy, continuing the U.S. pressure on its once strong ally to accept the call of hundreds of thousands of demonstrators over the past week for democratic change.

The administration's call for an immediate transition from three decades of authoritarian rule in Egypt has coincided with American hopes that reforms in Jordan and Yemen could stave off similar revolt.

All three countries have experienced instability since protesters in Tunisia chased their leader from power last month.

Separately Thursday, a senior intelligence official said Obama was warned of instability in Egypt "at the end of last year."

CIA official Stephanie O'Sullivan would provide no further detail during an open Senate confirmation hearing to be the deputy director of national intelligence.

The chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., told The Associated Press that the events "should not have come upon us with the surprise that they did."

She said the Internet's use in organizing demonstrations in Tunisia and Egypt should have provided "much more warning," and that her committee would look into how intelligence agencies performed.

"Was someone looking at what was going on the Internet?" she asked.

2G spectrum scam: Raja, aides to be produced in court today

New Delhi: A day after their arrest, former Telecom Minister A Raja and two of his close aides will be produced in the Patiala House court in New Delhi today by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The agency is planning to seek Mr Raja's custody for detailed questioning. It has also invited Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials for a joint probe. The three spent the night at the CBI headquarters.

On Wednesday, hours after he was summoned to the CBI headquarters for questioning, Mr Raja was arrested for his alleged role in the 2G spectrum scam. Also arrested were two men who worked closely with Mr Raja - R K Chandolia, who served as his Personal Secretary, and Siddharth Behura, who was Telecom Secretary.(Read: Key Raja aides arrested)

The Congress quickly asserted that the arrest of the DMK leader will not impact its alliance with Mr Raja's party in Tamil Nadu; the BJP focused on describing the action against Mr Raja as "too little, too late." (Read: Raja alone 'didn't gulp crores', says BJP)

And across the political board, all players agree that the arrest is an attempt by the government to rebut charges that it has not acted against corruption - a refrain of the Opposition over the last few months.

Mr Raja's arrest has been seen as a given in political circles for weeks now. He has been interrogated by the CBI four times since December, including on Monday.

His homes and offices in Tamil Nadu and Delhi have been raided; his diary and computers were seized by the CBI and are likely to be presented against him as evidence.

In 2008, Mr Raja, as Telecom Minister, sold valuable spectrum to telecom operators at prices that were determined in 2001; some companies that won 2G licences were new to the telecom sector, and sold some of their stake immediately for huge profits. The financial and procedural irregularities were pointed out almost immediately by the Opposition.

But it was only in November 2010 that the allegations seemed poised to push Mr Raja out of the Telecom Ministry. The catalyst was a report by the government's auditor - the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) - which declared that Mr Raja was guilty of colluding with companies he favoured to grant them mobile licences, even though they were ineligible and had in some cases lied or misrepresented information in their applications. The figure of Rs. 1.76 lakh crore floated by the CAG as the value of the scam crushed any chances of Mr Raja's survival.

He was forced to resign, though he said in his defence that he had followed the policies introduced by his predecessors in the NDA government. He also said that by selling spectrum cheaply, he had delivered a country of mobile users - India's immoderate tele-density, he said, could be attributed directly to this.

Kapil Sibal, who replaced Mr Raja as Telecom Minister, described the CAG report as "completely erroneous" and said the government had suffered no losses on account of 2G allocation. On Wednesday, the BJP's Arun Jaitley said the fact that Mr Raja has been arrested neutralized Mr Sibal's claim. If the 2G process had been handled correctly, he asked, why was Mr Raja arrested?

Mr Jaitley also went on to target the Prime Minister, asking why he had kept silent for so long on the 2G scam when it was apparent that there were serious concerns about a senior minister in his cabinet.

The government has been accused repeatedly of shielding Mr Raja to protect its alliance with the DMK. At the Centre, the DMK is a key partner in the UPA coalition. In Tamil Nadu, the Congress props up the DMK government. And both parties have announced their partnership will continue for the state elections due to be held in May.

Mr Raja's arrest gives the Congress an enviable advantage now in that partnership. The Congress asserted on Wednesday that Mr Raja's arrest is not a stress test for its relationship with the DMK. In Tamil Nadu, DMK sources tell NDTV that while Mr Raja's arrest could matter to voters in cities like Chennai and Madurai, rural voters have been disinterested in the 2G scam.

So far, the DMK has stood firmly by Mr Raja, stressing that it would take action against him only if he were found guilty in the 2G spectrum scam. In December, the party organised a series of rallies to project Mr Raja as a reliable and admirable leader.

Jayalalithaa won't let the DMK forget that. In the Tamil Nadu elections where she will confront the Congress-DMK alliance, Mr Raja gives her much ammunition. "This arrest only raises more questions than it answers...it seems to be a ruse to hoodwink the public and also to tell the Supreme Court that some action has been taken with regard to the 2G spectrum scam." (Read: Jayalalithaa's entire statement on Raja arrest)

The CBI's investigation into the 2G scam is being closely monitored by the Supreme Court on the basis of several petitions, including one filed by former Law Minister Subramanian Swamy. On multiple occasions, the CBI has been accused by the court of mishandling the inquiry.

The 2G scam has also turned into one of India's biggest political battles. The Opposition refused to let Parliament function during the Winter Session after the government refused to sanction a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). The BJP has threatened that the Budget Session scheduled to start soon will see the same forces at work, unless a JPC is set up.

The government has argued that in addition to the CBI and the Supreme Court, the 2G scam is being studied by Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) which is headed by BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi. Creating a JPC, it says, will only slow down the process of nailing who's to blame for the 2G scam. The Prime Minister has offered to appear before the PAC - Mr Joshi has said the offer will be considered at a later stage.

On Wednesday, Mr Jaitley said that the demand for a JPC has not been weakened by Mr Raja's arrest. "The JPC is on a much larger issue. Even on the culpability of Raja, now that they are admitting he prima facie did something wrong and arrested him, what was the Prime Minister doing when it was brought to his notice? So with such a track record of a cover up I don't think the government anywhere comes out in the clear," said Jaitley. (Read and watch: Why was PM silent, asks Arun Jaitley)
